Summary, etc. ABSTRACT: Hypertension is a non-communicable disease of major public health importance resulting in increased morbidity and mortality among populations. The present study was carried out among medical students with the following objectives (1) to determine the prevalence of hypertension among medical students in FEU-NRMF and (2) to determine the prevalence of risk factors associated with hypertension. The study design was a cross-sectional study which lasted from November 17-25, 2016. The sample size was 200 which were selected using a stratified random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire adapted from the WHO STEPwise Approach to NCD Risk-factor surveillance was used to collect data from the participants. Blood pressure was measured in a sitting posture using a standard sphygmomanometer. Statistical analysis was done using percentage, chi square, and logistic regression. All the participants were between 20 to 35 years old. Out of the 200 participants, 134 were femaes and 66 were males. Thirty students or about 15% of the subjects were identified to be hypertensive. Among the risk factors present, low physical activity was the most distinguished factor among the student population, while advanced age resulted to be least. Increased body Mass Index (BMI) and cigarette smoking were identified as factors most likely to lead hypertension among the non-hypertensive subjects. It is important that health care providers identify these risks, especially in this population and give attention in treating these modified risk factors as well as monitor identified hypertension individuals.
