Summary: ABSTRACT: Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) is a common complication of coronary heart diseases. It is associated with more than 2.5 million hospitalizations worldwide each year. ACS describes clinical disorders ranging from ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) to non-ST-elevation myocardinal infarction (NSTEMI) and unstable angina (UA). Platelets play role in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disorders including atherosclerosis and its complications. Larger and hyperreactive platelets accelerate the formation of an intracoronary thrombus, leading to a cascade of clinical events such as acute coronary syndrome. Studies have shown that mean platelet volume (MPV) is the most commonly used measurement of platelet size and is a potential maker of platelets reactivity including increased platelet aggregation, thromboxane synthesis and increased expression of adhesion molecule. An increased Mean Platelet Volume (MPV) as an indicator of larger and more reactive platelets resulting from an increased platelet turnover may therefore represent a risk factor for overall mortality including myocardial infarction.
