ABSTRACT: Polycythemia Vera is a clonal disorder involving a multipotent hematopoietic progenitor cell in which phenotypically normal red cells, granulocytes, and platelets accumulate in the absence of a recognizable physiologic stimulus. This is a retrospective cohort study involving 142 polycythemia vera patients, using haemoglobin and platelet count as predictors to acute ischemic stroke. Although both parameters are highly specific, the cut-off value for its sensitivity in predicting acute ischemic stroke is high, resulting to poor parameters in predicting the risk of having ischemic stroke.
