Abstract: Tuberculosis has been an ancient disease which in the recent decades became an easy illness to diagnose and manage due to its typical manifestations become a typical and confusing, rendering diagnosis difficult and complicated. An observational study evaluating the medical records of patients admitted at the Quezon Institute from December 1991 to December 1992 was done to compare the severity of PTB in DM-PTB and non-DM-PTB as to their chest x-ray and their sputum AFB result. It has been the conclusion of this study that the DM-PTB patient showed more infiltrates and categorically located cavities; and more M. tuberculosis organisms in their AFB findings as compared to non-DM-PTB. This finding could be attributed to the impaired defense mechanisms of the DM patient especially referring to leukocyte phagocytic and chemotactic functions. Certain substances in the food of these patients also served as favorable media for their growth. The study was confined to these two clinical parameters because of the practical reason that these are mostly utilized diagnostic procedures of PTB. However, a detailed study of this comparison especially at a biomolecular level is recommended to have a more solid ground to rely on.
