Summary: ABSTRACT: This study aims to determine if Gallus gallus domesticus shell chalk is eligible as an alternative to commercial chalk by comparing their characteristics. An alternative chalk composed of Gallus gallus domesticus shell was made and synthesized using an experimental procedure that utilizes the combination of plaster of paris and starch as binding materials. The characteristics of the commercially available chalk and gallus gallus domesticus shell chalk were compared by conducting drop test, scribble test, and erasability test, in five trails, respectively. Results show that the Gallus gallus domesticus shell chalk showed more signs of toughness than the commercial chalk in drop test; it stayed intact in contrast to the commercial chalk that broke into two pieces. Gallus gallus domesticus shell chalk has a moderate marking quality, while the commercial chalk's marking has a good marking quality, based on the performed scribble test. Lastly, erasability test showed that the marking of both chalks can be fully erased. As a conclusion, there are differences in the characteristics and performance of the Gallus gallus domesticus shell chalk compared to the commercial chalk, but Gallus gallus domesticus shell chalk has the potential to be used as an alternative in campuses or schools, especially with adjusted procedures and materials. Given this, the use of Gallus gallus domesticus shell chalk is recommended because of the environmental and health benefits that it can offer over the commercially available chalk.
