Summary: Abstract: Pediatric patients requiring critical care have higher risk of mortality. There is limited local data on the risk factors associated with pediatric mortality in the ICU. The aim of this study is to look into the local determinants of mortality in PICU. The aim of this study is to look into the local determinants of mortality in PICU patients. This is a retrospective cohort study that determined the factors affecting mortality in PICU patients in a tertiary training hospital charts of patients admitted in the PICU from 2009 to 2019 were reviewed. Data collected included age, sex, shock, GCS, origin of admission, comorbidity, and time of death in reference to the time of admission to PICU. Out of the 344 patients and 29.06% were ages 5 to 10 years old. The most common reasons for admission were shock (n= 192, 55.81%) and decreased GCS score (n=49, 14.2%). GCS score, shock and age were risk factors associated with mortality in the univariate analysis but none were found to be independent risk factor for mortality. There were more male, older children admitted to PICU, mostly due to shock or decreased GCS. There were no independent risk factors identified but the study had limited patients from one hospital. Further multi-center studies with higher sample size are recommended.
