ABSTRACT:
Appendiceal mucocele is an appendicular dilation secondary to the intraluminal accumulation of mucosal material. The process includes obstruction of the appendiceal lumen by progressive accumulation of mucus that causes progressive distention of the appendix. The cause may include benign and malignant lesions which may be from mucus retention cyst due to obstruction from appendicolith, from polyp and most commonly from low grade or high-grade mucinous neoplasms.
Several imaging modalities may be use in the diagnosis of appendiceal mucocele. Modalities such as barium enema using fluoroscopy may be done. Others include ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and most importantly computed tomography (CT) scan. Appropriate preoperative diagnosis and surgical resection remain the standard treatments.
This report aims to present a rare case of appendiceal mucocele in a female patient in her sixth decade who came to our institution for scheduled surgical procedure. Initial ultrasound in a private clinic showed a mass in the right lower quadrant. Subsequent admission was advised for further work up and surgery if clinically warranted. Computed tomography (CT) was revealed a tubular structure with mucin suggestive of appendiceal mucocele. An exploratory laparotomy, appendectomy, en block resection were performed without complications. The histopathological examination demonstrated simple appendiceal mucocele without neoplastic activity.
