Abstract: Mesenteric venous is generally difficult to diagnose and can be fetal. It is an uncommon and unrecognized cause of abdominal pain. Etiology is unknown however hypercoagulable states have been linked to its pathogenesis. Diagnosis is often delayed because of its varied clinical presentation. I will present a case of unexplained abdominal pain which after evaluation was due to venous occlusion of the superior mesentric vein. Advances in imaging techniques such as CAT scan and MRI have aid in its early diagnosis. Early initiation of anticoagulation therapy improved patient`s condition and prevented serious complication such as peritonitis which is undiagnosed and managed incorrectly could have resulted to this demise.
