Summary: Abstract: To determine the factors associated with the risk of picky eating among 3-5 year old children who are seen at FEU_NRMF Medical Center. The parents or caregivers of 3-5 year old childrenadmitted and seen at the out-patient department of FEU-NRMF Medical Center, who do not have chronic medical condition and dental or oral problems such as cleft lip or palate that may affect feeding were made to answer a two-part self administered questionnaire after obtaining an informed consent BMI of each child was computed. Descriptive statistics were generated for all variables. Frequencies and percentages were computed for nominal data. Mean ± SD were generated for numerical data. Comparison of the different variables under study was done using T-test and Chi-square test. Four hundred twenty-four (92.4% of the 459) children aged 3-5 years old are picky eaters. 21.7% of them are four years old; 54.9% are males. 30% are the youngest children 100% of the severely wasted children are picky eaters. 67.5% of them have normal BMI. Maternal age is significantly related with picky eating. The proportion of picky eaters is highest among mothers who are below 31 years old. Age of the caregiver was significantly associated with picky eating (p=0.001). The proportion of picky eaters is highest among caregivers who are 21-30 years old. Picky eating was found to be not significantly related with sex, birth order, age and no. of children. The two groups of children were found to be significantly different on maternal age and age of caregiver only. Picky eating was common among children 3-5 years old seen at FEU-NRMF Medical Center with a prevalence rate of 92.4%. Factors associated with picky eating were maternal and caregiver age. Majority of them had normal BMi. No significant correlation was noted between age, sex, gender, birth order, number of children and picky eating.
