ABSTRACT: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (copd) is characterized by mucus hypersecretion that contributes to the morbidity and is associated with increased mortality. The Lung Flute is a new oscillatory positive expiratory pressure (opep) device that produces a low frequency acoustic wave with vigorous exhalation that increases mucociliary clearance. The CASA-Q is a 20-item questionnaire that has four domains relating to the frequency and severity of cough and sputum symptoms and their impact on patients` daily lives. The Cough and Sputum Assessment Questionnaire (CASA-Q) has been proven to be responsive to symptom changes (cough and sputum frequency and severity) in COPD patients recovering from an exacerbation. We hypothesized that addition of the Lung Flute with standard COPD exacerbation therapy, used on a twice-daily basis will provide clinical benefit to patients with acute exacerbation COPD in terms of cough and sputum frequency and severity.
