Summary: Abstract: Energy expenditure of both humans and animals increased significantly with intake of large amounts of dietary sugars, particularly fructose and sucrose. Because of their high level of consumption, concern persists about their possible effects. To determine the metabolic effects of dietary fructose and suucrose, 60 grams per day of fructose and sucrose were incorporated into the standard diet meal of 26 healthy 1-C1 medical students, each diet was used up for two weeks with a washout period in between. Serum glucose, triglyceride and uric acid levels were analysed using fasting and a 2-hour postprandial sample. It was found out that 2-week fructose-enriched diet resulted in decrease serum glucose and triglyceride level (by 0.36 and 0.18 mmol/L respectively) and increase in serum uric acid level (by 0.039 mmol/L). The results obtainedwere significant only in glucose and uric acid. A 2-week sucrose enriched diet increase serum glucose, triglyceride and uric acid level (by 0.139, and 0.16 mm/L respectively). Changes in serum glucose and triglyceride levels were found to be significant, while for serum uric acid level was insignificant.
