Summary: The hypoglycemic effect of the Aloe vera extract was compared with that of Insulin. After taking the baseline blood sugar levels of all the mice, Alloxan was used to induce hyperglycemia. Three days after, the hypoglycemic effects of these agents were tested. Three groups of acclimatized mice with 6 members each were used in the study. Group A served as the control, group B received an insulin dose of 2 U/kg BW, subcuutancously while group C received the aloe extract at a dose of 500 mg/kg per orem. Blood sugar levels were taken after the first to the fourth hour. Results show that there was a significant decrease on the blood sugar levels of mice of group C after the 3rd and 4th hour. A more abrupt decrease was seen on the blood sugar levels of mice from group B. The hypoglycemic effect of Insulin was seen right after the 1st and 2nd hour. Surprisingly, the blood sugar levels of the mice from group A decreased on the 1st hour and continued to decrease after the 2nd to 4th hours. Aloe vera has a hyypoglycemic property and can be used as an alternative to the standard drug Insulin. But still, Insulin is the more effective hypoglycemic agent.
