Dissertation note: Pharmacology Thesis Summary: The research is aimed at comparing the effect of grape juice flavonoids and aspirin on bleeding time and to determine whether grape juice flavonoids are as effective as aspirin in prolonging the bleeding time of hamster. Study designed used was experimental method. Ten hamsters were used in the experiment. Grape juice was administered, with a dose of 5 - 7.5 ml/kg BW daily for one week. A daily dose of (10 - 20 mg/kg BW) of aspirin was also administered for one week to the hamsters. A Control bleeding time was determined before administration of grape juice and aspirin, then after the one-week period bleeding time was determined. Administration of grape juice results to a 19.4 % increased in bleeding time (from control mean bleeding time of 2.99 to 3.57 experimental mean bleeding time). For aspirin, a 23.9% increased was noted (from control mean bleeding time of 4.85 to 6.01 experimental mean bleeding time). There is no significant different between the percent increased in mean bleeding time of aspirin and grape juice the platelet inhibitory effect of the flavonoids in grape juice may decrease the risk of Coronary thrombosis and Myocardial infarction.
