Dissertation note: Pharmacology Thesis Summary: Diarrhea remain a frequently encountered disease entity. The primary aim of this study is to determine the effect of `Tsaang gubat` leaves (Carmona retusa) in the GIT motility of white Albino mice. With the rising costs of medicines, the need for less expensive alternative sources of drugs is necessary. The methodology is divided into the preparation of the plant extract, charcoal tracing method, test on animals, and use of drugs such as Atropine sulfate (Anespin) and Sodium picosulfate (Laxoberal). Forty healthy white Albino mice were divided into four groups (A, B, C and D), and all of them proceeded to the experiment proper. Statistical calculations were confined to the length of the intestine and distance traveled only, using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) one way test. The length of the small intestine of each mouse was measured from the pyloroduodenal junction up to the cecum; with alpha at 0.05 and 0.01 level of significance, F at 1,402, there is no significant difference. The mean length of the intestine of each mouse in the comparing groups is almost the same. The percentage of distance traveled by the activated charcoal in relation to the length of the small intestine of each mouse in the comparing group with alpha at 0.05 and 0.01 level of significance, F at 68.92, there is a significant difference. Using the Tukey HSD of Multiple Comparison at 0.05 level of significance, the mean of the test substance group is found not significantly different with the mean of the positive control, and significantly different with the means of the neutral group and the negative control group. It also showed that the mean of the neutral group is not significantly different with the mean of the negative control group. Therefore, "Tsaang gubat` has the same inhibitory effect as Atropine sulfate (Anespin) on the gastrointestinal tract motility of white Albino mice and can be potentially used on conditions requiring dexrease in the gastrointestinal motility.
