Pharmacology Thesis
The extraction of Vetiveria zizanioides was done using maceration and percolation method. Eighty percent (80%) of ethanol was used as a solvent to provide enough water to the dried plant. Determination of the Approximate Lethal Dose (ALD) followed. Working with only five different doses starting from 500 mg/kg Body Weight and an increasing interval of 500 mg/kg Body Weight and injecting to the five groups of guinea pigs, in which each of the group has one male and one female, the approximate lethal dose of Vetiveria zizanioides was found to be 1500 mg/kg Body Weight in a concentration of 30 g/100 mL. The pharmacological testing for anti-inflammatory drug was done using 10 guinea pigs, five for the experimental drug and five for the positive control, which is Mefenamic acid (Ponstan). Inflammation was induced using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema method and anti-inflammatory property of the drug was measured using the plethysmometer apparatus. The extract showed a good anti-inflammatory effect activity comparing with the positive control, Mefenamic Acid 6.5 mg/kg Body Weight (Ponstan Suspension 50 mg/5 mL).
