ABSTRACT: Moringa oleifera is one of the Philippine medicinal plants with folkloric use both as a hypermotility and a hypomotility agent in the gastrointestinal tract. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of crude malunggay leaves extract on the rate of intestinal contraction. The researchers administered 0.2, 0.4, and 0.6 cc of the extract (containing .03 g, .06 g, and .0 9 g of malunggay leaves respective) to the three groups of mice and compared their rates of intestinal motility with that of a control group. Results revealed that there was an increase in the intestinal motility of all groups, with mean rates at 84.46% (for the group administered with 0.2 cc), 90.31% (for the group administered with 0.4 cc) and 95.92% (for the group administered with 0.6 cc). However, a significant increase was only noted with the group administered 0.6 cc of the malunggay extract, with sig = .987 at a = .05. The researchers concluded that administration of 0.6 cc of crude malunggay extract containing 0.9 g of malunggay leaves effectively increase the rate of intestinal motility of mice.
