Summary: ABSTRACT: Garlic and its preparations have been widely recognized as agents for prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and other metabolic diseases. This study attempts to explore the possible antihyperglycemic actions of garlic. Transient hyperglycemia was induced in ten (10) healthy medical students, aged 22-35 years old by ingestion of 1.75g/kgBW glucose solution after fasting for at least eight (8) hours. A crossover experimental design was utilized where the subjects alternately received water and increasing doses of garlic capsules (2, 3, 5 capsules; equivalent to 1.5g garlic per capsule). The effect of the treatments on the blood glucose level of the students was measured using oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) Results showed that treatment with 5 garlic capsules gave the most significant decrease in the blood glucose level followed by the treatment of 3 garlic capsules. Treatment with 2 garlic capsules, however, showed no significant decrease in the blood glucose levels of the subjects.
