Dissertation note: Pharmacology Thesis Summary: Anti-pyretics are utilized to reduce fever, which is the body`s natural function to create an environment where infectious agents or foreign material not survivee. With the growing trend of commercializing herbal medicine, the study aims to determine the anti-pyretic property of pineapple extract (Ananas comosus). It employs a sample of 15 male Sprague Dawley Rats ( 1 negative control group, 1 positive control group, and 3 Test Groups) from the Bureau of Food and Drugs, aging 8 weeks old and weighing about 200 grams. A Low Dose ( 10g/Kg), Medium Dose (20g/Kg), and High Dose (40g/Kg) of pineapple extract from the plant stem were orally administered to the following test groups and antipyretic effect per half hour was observed. All doses resulted with anti-pyretic reducing fever. High Dose treatment reduced pyrexia at an earlier time than the commercially available anti-pyretic, paracetamol. The extract also had a longer duration of anti-pyretic effect then the commercial drug. Statistical analysis proved that there is no significant difference between Paracetamol and pineapple extract (F4.60+ 2.371,P-value 6*10) therefore the extract proved as an effective anti-pyretic.
