Summary: ABSTRACT: The anti-lipidemic activity of tanglad grass (Cymbopogon citrates) extract and Simvastatin (HMG CoA reduclase inhibor) was investigated in high lipid diet (hyperlipidemic) induced Sprague Dawley rats. Animals were randomly divided into Group A which was treated with Simvastatin only, Group B Tanglad only, and Group C Simvastatin and Tanglad . Hypercholesterolemic diet was induced and resulted in moderate increase in LDL levels. Upon treatment phase, rats were treated gavage for one week. LDL levels were determined after the treatment phase and administration of Simvastatin only showed significant decrease in LDL levels, the same effect was observed in Group B which was given Tanglad only. However, in Group C which was given tanglad with simvastatin, the result depicted no decrease in LDL levels but rather resulted to relative increase in the animals` LDL levels. These results show that combination of Cymbopogon Citrates (Tanglad) extract and Simvastatin does not lower the LDL levels on hypercholesterolemia-induced Sprague Dawley rats based on the result of an increase of LDL level of 3.6194 percent on LDL post-treatment but individual treatment shows a decrease in LDL levels of 26.9920 percent for Simvastatin followed by 16.8128 percent for Tanglad extract.
