Abstract: The hypoglycemic effect of 30% chitosan solution was investigated in Alloxan-induced diabetic mice by comparing the FBS level of those taking chitosan (CSR) and those who do not (NCR) using the t-test (a = 0.05). A significant lowering effect (p< 0.05) was observed 7 days after a daily feeding of chitosan. This is brought about by chitosan`s action in increasing the sensitivity of the insulin receptors. However, no such result was obtained for the NCR and for both CSR and NCR after 14 days and insulin resistance might probably bring this about secondary to defective insulin secretion and the possible tiring out (desensitization) and further destruction of the remaining pacreatic B-cells.
