Summary: Abstract: Cancer develops when cells in a certain part of the body begin to grow out of control. Lung cancer is the leading is cause of death of men in the Philippines while Colon cancer incidence and mortality ranks sixth among overall types of cancer (Philippine Cancer Society). The cytotoxic property of allyl-isothiocyanate extract from Brassica oleracea L. Var. Capitata ( Common Cabbage) formulated at different concentrations (0.39,0.78,1.56,3.13,6.25,12.5,25 and 50 ug/mL) was determined against human lung non-small cell adenocarcinoma (A549) and human colorectal cancer cells (COL2) in vitro using the MTT [3-(4,5-dimenthylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide] Cell Proliferation Assay. MTT assay is based on the finding that living cells are capable of reducing slightly colored tetrazolium salts into intensely colored formazan derivatives.it is based on the ability of a mitochondial dehydrogenase enzyme from viable cells to cleave the tetrazoliumrings of the pale yellow MTT and from a dark blue to purple formazan crystals are insoluble in aqueous solution.
