Summary: Abstract: According to a popular folklore in Mindanao, Tawa-tawa (Euphorbia hirta) has shown considerable effects in treating Dengue patients. Some doctors assumed that the mechanism for this was its ability to increase patient's platelet levels. However, the Department of Health has been cautious to prescribe the said herb to the public due to inadequate research works. The crude extract of tawa-tatwa was utilizaed in this study to determine its effect on the platelet counts of albino rats. The experimental method of research was utilized in the study. Crude extraction of the tawa-tawa plant (Euphorbia hirta L.) was done using rotary evaporator (rotavap). The crude extract, at different concentrations (50%, 75% 100%) was then introduced to female albino rats (Rattus norvegicus albinus). Initial platelet counts were taken prior to administration to establish a baseline. Platelet counts of the albino rats were then monitored for 8 hours following the two-hour interval format. The data were verified the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The statistical treatment showed that the average platelet count after an eight-hour monitoring ranges from 680 pc cu.mm to 820 per cu.mm. Experimental group gave no significant increase on the platelet count of albino rats. The significant difference in the platelet counts between the control and the experimental group was determined by the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The computed f-value was lesser than the tabular value at 0.05 level of significance. This verified that there was no significant difference on the changes of the platelet count of the experimental female albino rats compared with the controls.
