ABSTRACT: This research aims to determine the diuretic property of Zea mays linn. The objectives of this study is mainly to investigate the cornsilk extract from Zea mays for its diuretic property. Thirty-five healthy albino rats were used as test animals. NSS was infused as the control and 5 increasing doses and concentration of the extract was injected intraperitoneally. Urine output was then observed and collected through the use of serological pipette every 30 minutes for 5 hours. For the data analysis, ANOVA and paired sample test were utilized. The ANOVA resulted to p value of 0.0246) p<.05), so it can be derived that there is a significant difference in the urine output between the doses. In the paired sample tests, all the pairs were significant except for the last two days (dose 5 and 6) with p>.05. The above tests therefore showed tht the Zea mays extract at increasing doses has an increasing effect on the urine output of the test animals. This study has proven that Zea mays cornsilk extract may exhibit diuretic property based on the results obtained.
