ABSTRACT:
A study investigating the impact of Instagram on the perception of physical attributes among local teenagers. The purpose of the study was to explore the positive and negative effects
of Instagram use on teens' self-perception, drawing on theoretical frameworks such as Festinger's Social Comparison Theory, Objectification Theory, and Self-Determination Theoiy.
The study employed a mixed-methods approach, involving a sample of local teens from the target population. The data collection methods included surveys and interviews to gather
insights into the participants' experiences and perspectives. Descriptive statistics were utilized to analyze the survey responses, providing a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and nature of the perceived impact. The findings of the study revealed both positive and negative effects of Instagram use on teens' perception of their physical attributes. Positive impacts were observed in relation to selfdetermination theory, highlighting how Instagram can serve as a platform for self-expression and motivation. However, negative impacts were evident, as Instagram's emphasis on social comparison and objectification theory contributed to feelings of dissatisfaction and inadequacy. This study contributes to the existing literature by providing a foundation for understanding the complex relationship between Instagram use and teens' perception of their physical attributes. The findings underscore the importance of promoting healthy body image and self-esteem among teenagers in the digital age. The implications of this research extend to the knowledge economy and society, as it sheds light on the potential effects of social media on young individuals' wellbeing.
