Summary: Abstract: Clinical instructors play an important role in the education and in the development of nursing students. Exploration of effective characteristics of clinical instructors provides insight into improvement of educational programs for developing nurses. The objectives of this study were to determine the characteristics of an effective clinical instructor as perceived by nursing students in terms of teaching ability, interpersonal relationship, personality and evaluation, to identify which subset among four (4) domains of characteristics an effective clinical instructors was deemed most important by nursing student and to determine the significant difference on the characteristics of an effective clinical instructors as perceived by the different year level. The population included 82 nursing students from level II, III, IV of Far Eastern University - Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation. The researchers used a descriptive survey research design for this study. The survey instrument used in this study was the modified Nursing Clinical Teacher Effectiveness Inventory (NCTEI) developed by Knox and Morgan (1987). The first part the questionnaire consists of 43 characteristics of clinical instructor divided into four domains with four point likert-type scale. The part two of the survey tool consists of 4 domains which will be ranked from 1 (most important) to 4 (least important). Data were analyzed using a variety of statistical treatment. Results showed that the most effective characteristic of a Clinical Instructor is the Interpersonal Relationship with a mean score of 3.60, while the least effective characteristic is Evaluation with mean of 3.51. The most important domain of the characteristics of an effective clinical instructors perceived by nursing student in teaching ability with percentage of 46.34%, while the least important domain is evaluation with a percentage of 6.10% . The highest mean of all domains is Interpersonal Relationship with score of 3.75.Both Teaching ability and Evaluation has a mean of (3.69). Lastly Personality with mean of (3.67). All p-value results are greater than the level of significance (0.05), therefore, there is no significant difference on the characteristics of an effective clinical instructor as perceived by the different year level. The researches highly recommend that clinical instructors should maintain the effectiveness of their interpersonal relationships with their students and students should not perceived an effective clinical instructor based only on teaching ability, students should equally perceived every domain of an effective clinical instructor important.
