Summary: Abstract: Anxiety is the central nervous system's physiological and emotional responses to a vague sense of threat or danger. According to Van Kerkhoven patients for elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy have higher anxiety levels of 34% compared to patients for colonoscopy 25%. As anesthesiologists, we want to assure the safety of the patients, reduce the anxiety and make them feel as comfortable as possible before, during and after the procedure. The objective of the study were to identify the level of anxiety and depression of patients before endoscopy and to compare the effectivity of verbal explanation and video presentation in reducing anxiety and depression. The Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale/Hospital anxiety Depression Scale-Pilipino questionnaire by Zigmond and Snaith is a 14 item questionnaire composed of 7 items for anxiety and 7 items for depression that can help identify patients with anxiety and depression. A total of 151 patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy was divided into Group A (verbal) and Group B (video). Anxiety and depression was identified pre produce by answering the HADS-P questionnaire and was compared post intervention. T-test and Chi-square test were used to compare the demographic data and paired T-test to analyze The HADS-P scores. A confidence interval of 95% was used with a significant value of p<0.05. Both verbal and video presentation were equally effective in reducing HADS-P score in patients who underwent elective upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
