Dissertation note: Pharmacology Thesis Summary: Kamias fruit alkaloid as an antipyretic agent was determined in rabbits with Brewer`s induced fever. 20 Rabbits weighing 490 to 510 grams with a normal temperature of 38.0 C to 39.0 C was given 0.5 ml Brewer`s yeast subcutaneously to induce fever defined as an increase in baseline of 1.5C. On fever. the experimental group (group B, 10 rabbits) and control group (group A, 10 rabbits) received a precomputed single oral dose of 0.05ml Kamias alkaloid fruit extract and single oral dose of 0.05 ml NSS, respectively. Rectal temperature was noted after administration of Kamias fruit alkaloid or NSS for 8 consecutive hours. Repeated measures were done by doing two trials using the same subjects. Within 3 hours after administration of alkaloid extract, the temperature of group B returned to baseline. Using t-test at 95% confidence interval, there was no significant between the mean of expected decrease in temperature and the decrease in temperature after using Kamias fruit alkaloid extract in rabbits with Brewer`s yeast induced fever for trials 1 and 2 Group B. For group A, the temperature of the subjects continued to increase with a peak in fever followed by a small decrease in temperature which did not return to baseline after 8 hours. In this study, Kamias fruit alkaloid extract presented an antipyretic activity in rabbits with Brewer`s yeast induced fever.
