Abstract: Despite the existence of efficacious medications, many patients in actual practice remain with uncontrolled DM. This paper examines the effect of increasing the level of awareness among the family members of diabetic patients about the disease and its complications. proper nutrition and the importance of early detection. The group examined 32 family members aged 18 years old and above of diabetic patients at FEU-OPD Diabetic Clinic. A questionnaire with positive or negative response were given to the family members evaluating their basic understanding about Diabetes Mellitus. Screening test for Fasting Blood Sugar using glucometer was also done to know who among the family members are at risk of having DM. Out of 32 family members, 4 were found out to have an increase in their blood sugar. A lecture was conducted which covers the pathophysiology of DM, risk factors of acquiring the disease, proper nutrition and diet, and the importance of compliance of medication. Post-test with corresponding positive and negative response was conducted a week later. T-test was used to evaluate the results. More than 80% increased awareness was obtained which indicates that there is a significant chance. Family members, therefore, are more aware that proper adherence to medication. diet, nutrition, exercise and proper support from their family members should be considered in the management of DM.
