PRELIMINARY STUDY ON THE EMOTIONAL STATUS OF THE FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY - DR. NICANOR REYES MEDICAL FOUNDATION (FEU-NRMF ) MEDICAL STUDENTS S.Y. 2003-2004

Summary: ABSTRACT: Emotional quotient (EQ) is a better predictor of success in life and work than intelligence quotient. A combination of descriptive and analytic study was done in order to obtain the EQ of FEU-NRMF medical students from the first to the fourth year levels and correlate them with the demographic factors such as age, gender, civil status, living condition. Academic load, relationship with opposite sex, socioeconomic status-and peers. The proponents` sampling method used was total enumeration of 1,007 medical students with 878 respondents. Goleman`s EQ test was adopted to measure EQ. Questionnaires were made and used to measure the relation between the EQ scores and the different demographic factors. Results revealed that out of the 878 respondents only 5 (0.6 %) showed high EQ scores, 328 (39.38%) had average EQ scores and 500 (60.02%) had below average EQ scores. Out of the 234 1st year students 0 (0%) had high EQ scores, 109 (46.58%) had average EQ scores and 125 (53.4%) had average scores. Among 294 2nd year students 3 (1.0%) had high EQ scores, 118 (40.1%) had average EQ scores and 173 (58.8%) had below average EQ scores; out of the 167 3rd year students 1 (0.6%) had high EQ scores, 56 (33.5%) had average EQ scores and 110 (65.8%) had below average EQ scores. Lastly, out of the 137 4th year students 1 (0.73%) had high EQ scores, 44 (32.1%) had average EQ scores and 92 (67.15%) had below average EQ scores. The different factors being measured revealed insignificant relationship with EQ scores while year level was said to have a weak negative significance relationship with EQ scores (p-value of 0.006 at a = 0.1) . Based from the data gathered, most of the FEU medical students have below average EQ scores. Majority of which came from the second year medical students. Among the first year students, age was significant (p-value=0.003). Among the second year students, relationship with opposite sex and academic load was related to EQ with a p-value of 0.047 and 0.050 respectively. Among the third year and the fourth year students. None of the variables showed significant relationship.
