Summary: Abstract: Jasminum sambac, widely known in the Philippines as the Sampaguita, has been used as herbal medicine to counteract bloating. The researchers were curious on the other uses of the Jasminum sambac flower, that they tested the effectivity of its crude extract, using ethanol as the primary solvent, against Staphylococcus aureus, a known cause of skin infections and Escherichia coli, a known cause of Urinary Tract Infection in both male and females. The researchers diluted the crude extract by means of the two-fold serial dilution. Using a vortex mixture the resulting dilutions were mixed until uniform. The resulting mixture was aspired onto ten test tubes containing Nutrient Broth. The first test tube contained the undiluted crude extract, while the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth tubes were labaled as the positive negative control and control tube with known antibiotic respectively. The result of the anti-microbial susceptibility testing has shown that the crude extract was primarily effective against Escherichia coli at a concentration of 2.02%, while Staphylococcus aureus was susceptible to the crude extract at a concentration of 1.01%.
