ABSTRACT: This study focused on the hypoglycemic effect of 10% soursop leaf decoction on sucrose-induced albino rats. Ten male albino rats weighing from 80-130 grams are divided into two groups: controlled and experimental groups. All ten rats are fasted for eight hours, using a probe and glucometer, the individual blood glucose level is considered to be the normal blood glucose level (BGL) of the rats was obtained and recorded. All of the subjects were then fed orally in a 1:1 ratio of pellets and sucrose solution (18.75g/ 200ml) for twenty days. After the twenty days of the high sugar diet, the diabetic subjects were allowed to fast for eight hours and the initial BGL of all the rats was obtained and recorded. Oral administration of 2ml Annona muricata decoction was administered to the five experimental subjects, while distilled water of the same volume was given to the other five rats of the controlled group. The final BGL for all the subjects were then measured after three hours. Annona muricata decoction was prepared beforehand by the researchers by boiling 270ml of distilled water with 30g of young soursop leaves at low heat in five minutes cooled and filtered. Result showed that there is a significant lowering in the initial and the final blood glucose level of the experimental subjects while no change in the initial and final blood glucose level of the controlled subjects. The significant difference in the initial and final blood glucose level of the experimental subjects was attributed to the administration of the 10% guyabano leaf decoction. This indicated a hypoglycemia effect of the decoction which was concluded to trigger enhanced membrane permeability, efficient hormone production and better cell glucose specificity.
