Summary: Abstract: To compare the effectiveness of 10% Burrow's solution and 1% clotrimazole in the treatment of otomycosis To compare the effect of 10% Burrow's solution and 1% clotrimazole in; reducing the degree of symptoms of otomycosis based on an Analog Scale reducing the degree of fungal elements seen by gross visualization through otoscopy the presence or absence of fungal elements through microscopy To compare the length of treatment between 10% Burrow's solution and 1% clotrimazole Double blind randomized controlled trial 98 patients were enrolled with a total of 144-tested ear All patients with signs and sypmtoms of otomycosis such as pruritus, otalgia, otorrhea, aural fullness /and hearing loss with otoscopic and microscopic findings of the presence of fungal elements by KOH Patients aged 18 years or younger, pregnant, with perforated eardrum, perichondritis, fever, history of hypersensitivity, had already been recruited to the study, or had been treated for otomycosis in the past month, patients who had taken oral antifungal medications in the past month. Removal of symptoms, negative findings of fungal elements by otoscopy and microscopy after each follow up Data were encoded and tallied in SPSS version 10 for windows. Descriptive statistics were generated for all variables. For normal data frequencies and percentages were computed. For numerical data, mean ± SD was generated. Comparison of the different variables under study was done The three most common symptoms of the patients were pruritus n=130 (90.3%), otorrhea n=114 (79.2%) and otalgia n=80 (55.6%). On the 7th day of treatment, significantly more proportion of subjects given 10% Burrow's has decreased severity and significantly lesser proportion on no change of symptoms. On the other hand, there was no significant difference in the proportion of subjects who were either asymptomatic, with decreased severity or with no change at 14th or 21st day. On otoscopy, the study showed no significant difference in the proportion of subjects with normal, decreased degree of infectionor with no change on all follow-ups. On microscopy, it showed no significant difference in the proportion of subjects with or without fungal elements. The study also showed that there was no significant difference in the proportion of subjects who were cured, improved or with no change as proven by p values 0.22, 0.49 and 1.00 respectively. The study showed that 10% Burrow's solution is as effective as 1% Clotrinazole in the treatment of otomycosis based on reducing the degree of symptoms, reducing the degree of infection seen by otoscopy, elimination of fungal elements seen by microscopy and based on the length of the treatment.
