Summary: Abstract: Pectin, a special fiber in fruits, has been reported to decrease total cholesterol levels in the human body. The ten fruits namely mango, calamansi, pineapple, tomato, dalandan, guava, pomelo, banana, papaya and apple were tested for their pectin content. Papaya ang suha yielded the highest amount of pectin, 3.18% and 2.38%, respectively, 56 rabbits were randomly divided into four groups equally. The first two weeks, the rabbits were fed with commerical rabbit pellets. The succeeding two weeks in high cholesterol diet consisting of 2 quail eggs were fed to the rabbits. In the next two weeks, the first three groups of rabbits were given a pectin solution from papaya, suha, and synthetic pectin, respectively in addition to the high cholesterol diet. The fourth group was given the placebo survey as the control. Blood cholesterol level was determined at the end of the first two weeks, second two weeks and on the third two weeks. Based on experiment it was noted that there is an inverse relationship between the amount of pectin in the fruit and the total blood cholesterol level as exemplified by pectin extract from papaya. T-test done showed no significant difference between papaya (20.5%) and synthetic pectin (21%) in lowering blood cholesterol level.
