A FOLLOW-UP STUDY COMPARING THE PAST AND PRESENT EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE SCORES OBTAINED FROM FIRST YEAR FEU-NRMF MEDICAL STUDENTS IN SY 2003-2004 AND SY 2006-2007 - QUEZON CITY FEU-NRMF FEBRUARY 2007 - 14 PAGES

ABSTRACT: This study aims to compare the past and present group Emotional Intelligence (EI) of 116 FEU-NRMF medical students who took the Goleman EQ questionnaire on two separate occasions, first during the second semester of SY 2003-2004 and the other during the second semester of SY 2006-2007. Using the same validated questionnaire, the group EI of the 116 medical students was re-evaluated and classified as "low", "average" or "high". Data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U-Test for sample sizes larger than 20. A p value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results showed a slight increase in the number of students with low El, which showed to be statistically significant (P=0.000). The participants were given a checklist of different intrapersonal and interpersonal factors from which they were asked to choose those that may possibly increase, decrease, or have no effect in the Emotional Intelligence of Medical students. One-hundred four (89.7%) of the participants said that joining extracurricular activities and student organizations will improve the EI of medical students in general.
