THE COMPARATIVE EFFECTS OF SUGARDINE AND TAWASDINE IN HEALING OF A PARTIAL THICKNESS BURN IN ALBINO MICE (MUS MUSCULUS)

Summary: ABSTRACT: In spite of modern techniques in surgical intervention and discoveries of new antimicrobials wound healing and wound infection have been a problem since people nowadays look for an alternative antiseptic and anti-infective agents that have the same effect as the commercially prepared ones but assuring its availability and cost effectiveness. In this study, the objective of the researchers is to compare the effects of Sugardine and Tawadine in healing of a partial thickness burn in albino mice. The experiment aim to evaluate the wound healing properties of Sugardine (sugar in Betadine) and Tawasdine (tawas in Betadine) on artificially created partial thickness burn compared to commercially prepared agents such as Betadine for positive control and NSS for negative control. The study assessed wound healing properties specially on degree of epitheliazation, fibroblast proliferation, connective tissue deposition and neovascularization. A three-week study was done using a total of 84 Albino mice as subjects, with equal male and female population, same age between 8-10 weeks old, body weight between 21-23 grams and randomly divided into four groups (Groups 1,2,3,4). The male and female mice in each group were separated in order to prevent reproduction. At Day 0 partial thickness burn was made in the shaved dorsal aspect of the mice using a screw head with one centimeter diameter heated until red in an alcohol lamp. The first group which is the control group was treated with solution A (Betadine) at wound A and solution B (NSS) at wound B. Group 2,3,4 were the experimental groups treated with solution C (Sugardine) at wound C and solution D (Tawasdine) at wound D. Application of the solutions was done by a blinded individual. At Day 1, biopsy from each group was done and application of solutions. At Day 2- 21 continued biopsy from each group and application of solutions to remaining mice. Results were tabulated and analyzed comparing the Sugardine and Tawasdine with Betadine and NSS on partial thickness burn. Epithelialization was found to be better in both Sugardine and Tawasdine groups as compared to the control groups. Fibroblast proliferation and connective tissue deposition started earlier and achieved its maximal degree in both experimental groups and appeared to be better thant the Betadine. and NSS treated groups. With neovascularization, Sugardine showed greater number of capillaries at earlier day compared to Tawasdine. Based on the outcome it was concluded that Sugardine and Tawasdine have significant association in wound healing but Sugardine showed more significance on the parameters measured. The impressive results led the researchers to strongly recommend the use of these solutions in clinical management of wound healing. Further development and analysis of the findings will lead to better antiseptic and anti-infective agents in a lesser cost thus helping patients in a more practical way.
