AN EVALUATION OF THE INTERPERSONAL AND INTRAPERSONAL SKILLS EMPLOYED BY FOURTH YEAR NURSING STUDENTS OF FAR EASTERN UNIVERSITY - DR. NICANOR REYES MEDICAL FOUNDATION

Online resources: Summary: ABSTRACT: The study evaluates the interpersonal and intrapersonal adeptness of the fourth year nursing students of Far Eastern University - Dr. Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation. It recognizes the specific communication skills of each student and its significance in providing satisfactory patient care. Moreover, it evaluates the effect of possessing the said skills in the delivery of quality nursing care to the patient. The study did not consider the viewpoint of the patients but the researchers utilized specific studies and literatures in which the standards of nursing care is discussed and the gathered information became one of the basis in considering the factors which promotes patient satisfaction. The study is centered on the perception of the nursing students regarding the interpersonal and intrapersonal skills they possess in relation to their Performance in the clinical duty. Data are gathered from the whole batch of the fourth year nursing students through the use of a survey instrument which was self constructed by the researchers in which they incorporated with the gathered information from the literatures and studies they utilized in the study. The results of the study exhibited that the interpersonal and intrapersonal skills of the fourth year nursing students were more often being utilized by the students in rendering care for their patients. The results yielded with the fourth year nursing students exhibiting more on interpersonal adeptness in interacting and providing care to the patient. It was also found out that the nursing students employ effective skills on providing empathy, establishing rapport and listening actively to their patients with the scores of 3.64, 3.51 respectively. And least effective abilities are under the intrapersonal adeptness which are the ability of the patient to recognize strengths, understanding of self and of improving of weaknesses with the scores of 3.20 and 3.20 respectively. Of all the specific abilities on interpersonal and intrapersonal skills, both were manifested by the nursing students and applied in the clinical areas accordingly.
